Home Study:
Each evening grade seven students should be completing 70 minutes of home study. Within this time, 20 minutes should be devoted to home reading. The rest of the home study time should be spent on completing daily assignments, working ahead on long-term assignments, or reviewing materials taught in class. Daily assignments and home reading are to be recorded in the planner which is to be signed daily by a parent to indicate that the listed assignments and home reading are complete. If there is ever a reason (illness, family emergency etc.) that your child has not completed an assignment on time, please send a note to school explaining the situation and extra time will be given where warranted.
Daily Assignments are checked every morning. If a student has not completed an assignment by the due date they will receive a pink slip outlining the missing assignment(s). The student will take the slip and their materials to the Homework Club classroom at recess and/or lunch where they will work on the assignment(s). At the end of the day the pink slip is sent home to let you know about the late assignment. The slip will either indicate that the work was completed during Homework Club or that it is still outstanding. Please sign the slip to indicate that you are aware of the late assignment(s) and have your child return it to me.
The classroom will be open at 8:00 each morning for those students who would like to come inside for some quiet work time or to get organized before the start of the school day. Students who come inside may do so in order to work on assignments, to get some extra help, to read quietly, or to get their supplies organized for the day.
Monthly Reward:
At the end of each month an activity will be planned for the grade seven students as a reward for taking responsibility for daily homework. These activities will usually take the form of a free block during the school day when the students may watch a movie, play board games, receive extra PE time etc. Students who have had four or fewer late assignments for the month will be able to participate. If a student has had five or more late assignments in a given month, they will use the time to catch up on their class work.
Daily Physical Activity/Nutrition:
As Daily Physical Activity is now a part of our curriculum, the students will be participating in 30 minutes of physical activity each day. This time will often be split up between 2-3 small blocks throughout the day. With this increase in daily physical activity aside from regular PE classes, nutrition and eating habits become even more important. Starting the day with a healthy breakfast is essential in preparing your child’s body and mind for a productive school day. Please ensure that your child comes to school with a healthy snack and lunch as well as a water bottle that they can refill throughout the day. Students will also be required to have a deodorant stick that is to stay at school (no spray deodorants will be permitted).
Parent/Teacher Communication:
Each day the students record daily assignments and upcoming due dates in their planners. Please ensure that you sign your child’s planner each evening after seeing the completed homework. Feel free to use the planner or to contact me at any time at school (604-596-7517) or via email ([email protected]) if you have any questions or concerns. to communicate any concerns or questions that you may have.
Please feel free Your involvement in your child’s education is an essential factor in their success.
